0:35 - it felt like the unmodded playthrough got more and more like a job simulator and chore for you - so perfectly good reaction to do some adjustments bringing the fun back in the project for you. We need you to truly enjoy yourself <3 4:15 - "It felt okay enough for me" which honestly is an absolutely sufficient benchmark for most simulation use cases. As long as you don't get the assometre and other physical feedback into a simulation it will always be off anyways. 20:00 - this layout makes me wonder if anyone made a tram mod for DV. The curvature is very tramy. 22:35 - three locos in the course of running one long distance passenger train does sound historically accurate if you ask me. 29:20 - 0-2-0 when? Maximum traction 😝 35:30 - huh, just what I said half an hour ago =P 37:15 - the only steam loco throttle I operated was on a 7.25" Tinkerbell class engine with a rotary throttle. That one was very smooth to operate; however the slack was quite astonishing. It felt like maybe 20 degrees of slack between the points where you'd actually increase or decrease the steam admission. Though it probably felt like more than it actually was, as those things tend to do. I never bothered to measure it, you just worked with it. In hindsight I'm quite astonished how little I knew of the inner workings. I knew why water in the boiler is crucial and I could generally operate it without neither running out of steam or having the safety popping frequently, but that's about it. From today's perspective I'd have liked to have known more about the engine, but it is as it is. Especially since I'm, as you know, generally more a modern day railway person and would've never gotten (or looked for) that level of knowledge I got because of, well, you. 42:00 - you could always run on/in the cars and save your F key ^^' 50:15 - but you do sound better already

GOD I hate unions...dealt with some of that BS at conventions where only the Union people can plug/unplug an extension cord but they provided a faulty cord and then they don't actually get around to replacing the faulty cord until the event is over so we had to improvise with zipties and bent prongs to make something stay connected. Similarly moving folding tables was a "union only" thing but they wouldn't get around to them until after our chance to set up was over. One time I got mad and started dragging one out of the way of our booth area, they complained "you can't do that" so I set it down and start walking away. Then they yell "you can't leave it here, its blocking the walkway fire exits" well you just said I am not allowed to move it so I guess that's your problem now, should have moved it a day ago when I asked repeatedly. Worst was an argument about "not allowed to tape wires to the floor myself" for an exhibit display to prevent tripping...but also "we can't tape your wires to our floor because they aren't our wires". So you forbid me from doing it while refusing to do it either. Only a few people tripped over the unsecured wires that weekend...

Whether it's light rail, Commuter Rail or any Rail, if it's on rails or tracks I'm interested, by the way the San Diego Trolley is interesting that the Light Rail Tracks do connect to mainline tracks at the Railyard and there's even a freight operation that uses one of the Light Rail lines at night, so there are instances where even Light Rail Tracks connect to freight or commuter tracks, there’s also a light commuter rail line in Oceanside called the sprinter which they call light rail but is diesel powered and I don’t consider it true Light Rail as it’s the same style of commuter trains used in Germany and elsewhere

I've generally heard "heavy rail" being used to refer to subway/metro cars. For example, in NYC area, you have the NYC subway which is heavy rail under the FTA. The PATH system which runs like a subway but due to how the PRR set it up as the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad and it is under FRA authority even though it has an exclusive right of way. Meanwhile, the LIRR and Metro-North have EMUs that superficially resemble subway cars on the outside but they are true commuter rail. One interesting overlap is in the Cleveland RTA "Rapid" system. It has the Red line which uses heavy-rail EMUs and also has the Green/Blue/Waterfront light rail lines. The initial portion of these is the old Shaker Heights Rapid Transit which runs on road medians in Shaker Heights and private right of way to Tower City downtown. The waterfront line is likewise a mix of street running and private ROW. In a rare instance, the red, green and blue lines share tracks from just west of their separate E 79th Street stations to west of Tower City. E 55th and Tri-C Campus District (E 24th Street) are served by all three lines with high level platforms for the red line and low level platforms for Blue and Green. At Tower City, they still share track, however, the Red line has high level platforms on the west side and the Blue, Green and Waterfront Lines have low platforms on the east side. The light rail trains layover, reverse or enter the Waterfront Line west of Tower City. The trains on the Blue/Green/Waterfront Lines are "light rail" but the Shaker Heights sections were originally run with trolley and interurban cars including PCCs. The main change in the infrastructure since then is the partial or complete removal of the PCC turning loops at the east end of the lines.

To be fair, the definition of light rail transit gets even more complicated than that if you look at systems around the world. Railways like the REM are (collequolly) called light rail but are fully grade separated rapid transit systems. Part of the problem is because of "light metro" in that it's a metro system with lower capacity trains but also simpler building standards than a traditional metro (the original light metro, the DLR is similar but had a justification in that it mostly consists of existing, initially ran individual cars, uses automated trains _and_ uses vehicles which are closer to tramcars than the Underground). There also is the O-Train which consists of two networks / lines, one which uses tramcars but is entirely grade separated, the other which uses mainlines DMU from Germany (literally, being imported) but doesn't fulfill the crash standards of Canada. On the other end of the scale, there is the Skokie Swift which is a non-grade-separated line of Chicago L but rarely talked as light railway because, well, it's part of the Chicago L which is otherwise a rapid transit system (albeit with a few level crossings) down to using the same trains (at least this century onward because it used to run under overhead wires). One thing I will have to disagree is that street railways are (IMO at least) a subtype of light railways and I also don't consider the "strictly mixed-traffic" an important classification, though there still should be a degree of driving with cars (i.e. median running) and not besides them (tracks all the way to the side or completely away from any road traffic). For this reason, I see systems such as MAX and TRAX as regional streetcar networks with the former also being some sort of interurban. A premetro is a subtype in which case the branches are streetcar and the trunk a subway (the Green Line in Boston except for the D being the oldest example). It does leave out other systems without a proper term with some being basically mainline (TEXrail) and others being a weird mish-mash (LINK). This isn't to say that Europe is without any problems, of course. Rotterdam has only two lines which are grade separated (though this is partially because it took over existing railways and had its level crossings inherited, though the eastern portions of lines A and B are newly constructed), Oslo has Line 1 which is entirely at grade outside of the central trunk and Line 2 shares a portion with the tramway, Bochum has the U35 which is basically a rapid transit line which just happens to have level crossings for two kilometres (being entirely grade separated otherwise), Malaga has a "tramway" which only has in common with a tramway in that it uses standard tramcars in a situation where high-floor vehicles are better suited (one line being partially underground, the other being entirely this), Manchester has a regional tramway which has more street running than some other light rail (including these which are mentioned) but also uses high-floor vehicles (no street bording), Newcastle has the Chicago L of the UK (mostly grade separated outside of the few odd level crossings due to taking over existing lines), etc. We all are weird.

I can't see why they did not put language in the union agreement that covers locomotive ferry moves. Especially on the BNSF. I don't think i've ever seen any other railroad do locomotive ferry moves quite like them. So many locomotives in a single train, and nothing else. Sure other lines do dead moves all the time, too, but BNSF just does it on an epic scale.

For an European, it's quite interesting how heated a debate in the U.S. can become about definitions like streetcar, light rail or commuter rail, and how much it gets into intricate details. To me, it's easy. There are streetcars, which operate according to Streetcar Operating Regulations, and there are railways, which run according to Railway Operating Regulations. To me, that's the only differentiation that counts. And an actual car running on rails can be both. It just depends on where it is. If it is on rails licensed as railway, it's a railway. If it is on rails that are licensed as streetcars, then it's a streetcar. And if it switches over from a railway licensed track to a streetcar licensed track, it legally turns from a railway car into a streetcar. Karlsruhe, Germany is famous for having their streetcars running on railway tracks. Innsbruck has the lines 6 and STB, which run as streetcars through downtown Innsbruck, but as railways up the mountains to Igls and Fulpmes respectively (it used to have the line 4 to Hall doing the same, but this one was cancelled in the 1970ies). I even got into a heated debate how the Budapest Metro would be light rail, and not a subway, which does not make sense at all, because more than 125 years ago, it was commissioned as a subway, built as a subway and operated as a subway. Just because 75 years into its operation, someone on a different continent comes up with the term "light rail" does not change anything for Budapest Metro. It's still a subway, and it predates all subways with third rail electrification, which for some reason are now the gold standard for subways.

The ‘light rail’ definition also says something about the infrastructure - indeed not that the rails are “light”, but curvature and grades are… there (tighter, steeper, lighter railbeds…). Usually, the driver is the only “operator”, without conductor, signal-operators, guards etc. except maintenance. Signalling and train orders are automated. They often have a single operations central as resilience for non-normal conditions. Yes, they happen all the time… Add to this that even the driver may be surplus to demand, (DLR, others) where a “service assistant” is onboard the train, but not driving it - but _will_ if needed… Hyce and RMTransit say this better and simpler than me; _”it depends…”_ 😅

I love railroad stories, no matter where they happend. My dad told me a lot of this when he was at the "Deutsche Bundesbahn" here in Germany in some kind of the "good ol' times". Remembering a story about an interesting derailing of a heavy steam shunting locomotive which happend with a lot of loud bangs exactly on midnight at new year's eve on an empty rail in a freight station.... After this "incident" several people had to explain several things in a way they dont get degraded.... 😉🙃😂

  • @zaklex3165
    @zaklex3165 5 годин тому

Yes, you'll have to do one for signaling because that's were you can get into street light overrides(where the light rail/streetcar system overrides the regular operation of street signals giving the priority to the transit system and relegating the vehicle traffic to secondary status.

In Melbourne Australia we had, for a very long time, basically two systems, the full 3 or 6 car electric passenger trains and our tram network. the electric train network also took diesel electric freight trains. We never heard the term 'light rail' Then we started getting newer and bigger articulated trams, some now all but 3 car units. About that time two train lines started seeing severely reduced usage, so the government decided to convert them to 'Light rail', the first time I had heard the term, which basically meant those two lines were severed from the rail network and connected to the tram network, the 1500V overhead power being dropped to the 600V used by our trams. I would have thought they'd have to rip everything out and start from scratch, but no, about the only thing that saw major change was the station platforms being way lower. Mostly they sold off the old stations and built new, much simpler ones right next door. Just a platform and a partially sheltered waiting area/seating. It seems rather strange shooting down those lines, on regular ballasted tracks under the all but 100 year old lattice gantries and overhead gear. rather than 'custom' tram tracks set into bitumen roads, fighting with cars etc. I always took 'light rail' to mean ''light duty rail", smaller low profile all in one vehicles, that didn't need stations and platforms, rather than physically separate cars with visible couplings between them and proper full stations etc.

  • @JonatanGronoset

The tram system in Gothemburg is running at road level, the trains consist of 3-4 car units and obey the road traffic signals, move at the same speed as cars etc. They also run on sections of the normal alignment if need be. So they're street cars but also light rail? It's funny how in _some_ cases what is a "train" is very blurry and undefined.

32:00 timbre, the -re suffix being pronounced the same as -er is standard English. Metre (unit of measurement) and meter (device for measuring) are homophones for example. See also infrastructure and miniature and departure and calibre. When words with -re are loaned from French into English, as they have been continuously over the last thousand years, that’s just the way they’ve been changed. I was taught to pronounce the first vowel more like the french though, with a vowel closer to ‘o’ than the ‘a’ you’d find in the closely related ‘tambourine’, although my music teacher may have just been being pretentious.

So theoretically ETCS could be classified as a PTC system? Given that you say there isn't a well defined technical standard and only a loose set of definitions, wouldn't that create a lot of variety in different implementations of PTC? Would that create several incompatible systems? Personally I prefer ETCS as it's basically become an international standard at this point whilst being flexible enough for both passenger and freight.

I always thought 'light rail' was just a modern term for streetcar (or 'tram' as it's called in places like Australia and New Zealand). If I remember rightly, nine towns / cities in NZ had electric tram networks, but they had all closed by 1964. There was a fairly recent plan for a modern 'light rail' system in Auckland, but that was a complete disaster for a whole host of reasons, and cancelled before any length of track was even built. Fortunately, there are a few places in our country where heritage trams are preserved and restored to working order (featuring not just NZ trams, but also some trams that have come over from Australia). A good example is the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland. On the subject of light rail systems, I recommend looking up the Charleroi Metro in Belgium. It's a really strange system that uses (what look like) conventional trams, but the lines are a combination of underground sections, street running and dedicated right-of-way all on the same network.

This was such a laugh, miscommunication can be such a b***. Well it was not just pure luck I guess that the Boxcar was removed ha ha. Damn, what a commotion a single Boxcar can make 🤣 just because it looks like a chocho..

Would love to see you come out to Minnesota at some point. First would be obviously for the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. Would love to get your take on that. Second would be for our Light Rail System. They are opening a new branch here shortly that my brother is actually working on constructing. Third would be the Saint Paul Roundhouse Lastly would be our Streetcar Museum. I would love to see an actual heritage railway for streetcars here in Minnesota at some point, but I think we have a better shot at completing all freeway construction before that ever happens.

I would love to get more information about the different rail weights or rail types and we use today what we are using. Historically there were many different profiles, then some rails that look like ours nowdays, but they went thicker in the middle. And also why is a heavier rail capeable of more stress than a light one, if they both are on wooden planks? When you are writing in another language and don't know the vocabulary, it is hard to not sound dumber than you are...

I live in the DC region and we have a variety of systems including WMATA (Metrorail and Metrobus), MARC (commuter service in Maryland operating on CSX and Amtrak's NE Corridor), VRE (commuter service in northern Virginia operating on CSX and NS) and the infamous DC streetcar (ummm.....yeah.). Metrorail (our subway system) and CSX share the ROW with the red line bisecting the CSX double track Metropolitan Sub. (former B&O Metropolitan Branch) between NE DC and Silver Spring MD. I recently, as in just this week after having lived here for decades, learned that WMATA actually owns the ROW and leases the Met Sub back to CSX along this section. Back in the mid-80's, there were a couple of freight train derailments along this segment that naturally sparked concerns as to the safety of having a busy subway system running in parallel to an active railroad and I believe at one point, WMATA was trying to get CSX to alter its operations to restrict most of its traffic to overnight hours (Mr. Harrison would have had something to say about this I'm sure). The Met is also used by MARC and Amtrak. Freight operations remain unimpeded but they did install a corridor integrity monitor along the fences separating CSX and Metro. An abandoned interlocking tower (QN) was torn down at the insistence of WMATA due to the potential for arson. The tower was located adjacent to the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station.
